My View on Minor at College
In order to be more competitive in their future career, many college students choose to work on a minor besides a major. This is quite demanding in that they have to work much harder than those who choose to concentrate on their major only. However, I think it’s quite rewarding to have a minor on the side.
A minor is an alternative field of study that is a complement, or perhaps entirely different from your main field of study. Students use minors to fulfill either a personal interest or to supplement whatever it is that they are taking as their major. It typically involves a smaller number of units than the major.
Having a minor may be personally important to a student if his/her minor is a subject that he/she passionates about; he/she may, for example, want to go to medical school (hence the major in biology) but also loves the violin (hence the minor in music). They may also be personally interested in gaining skills and training in a certain field but not interested in pursuing the topic to the extent that a major would require.
Professionally speaking, minors can be a great help. One may need additional training for a career path that a minor can provide (in something like accounting). One may also want to improve the resume by taking courses and receiving training in a field he/she knows employers are always interested in.
Considering to the severe employment situation in the present job market, walking with two legs is always better. For example, if a student’s major is English, then he/she can choose the accounting or finance as the minor to enrich knowledge. After graduate, he/she can have more choices to choose a career or can combine the two subjects to get more opportunities.
To sum up, a minor for college students is rewarding as far as the factors of future employment and self-improvement are concerned.
